In BigQuery, the date shows up in the Preview as 2019-01-01.
However, in Metabase, the shows as December 31, 2018, 4:00 PM even though the timezone is set to database default – which I assume would mean it matches the database.

Currently BigQuery is not one of the supported databases for using with Reporting Timezone:
