SSH, SSL ---connection to MYSQL

Hello dear helpers,

background:

we are trying to install Metabase on Windows-11.

Mysql is in AWS

We have created a user with view permission only

the same user can access using Workbenach

Workbenach is connected to Mysql (going through a jump server) using SSH

we have installed Postgres and metabase

we can access localhost:3000

Questions:

in Metabase admin, tab “database”

Do we have to paste the SSH (pem)? or like workbench can we provide the path to the key (ssh)?

We get yellow error msg:

Metabase tried, but couldn't connect

Timed out after 10.0 s

-=-=-=

it is suggesting to
use SSL “try using a secure connection (SSL)
check metabase user permission

-=-=-

Any suggestions?

thanks.

If you are using SSH private key authentication then you must paste in the private key to use. Metabase does not support a local file path.

Thanks.

I did.

we get the error yellow box showing

Metabase tried, but couldn't connect

Timed out after 10.0 s

any ideas why?

Check the Metabase log, it should have an explanation. The SSH tunnel may not be coming up correctly.

Are you running Metabase in a container?

Thanks.

No. We have not installed Docker. Is it needed? for local PC windows-11

Questions:

  1. Where do we find the longs in Metabase?
  2. Beside SSH is SSL also requried?
  3. if we do not use SSH what are the other options?

Thanks,

Mark

A part of the log can be seen in Admin → Tools → Logs, you might have to trigger the connection attempt then quickly check the log for any messages.

SSL is required if your MySQL server is set to require it. Check RDS MySQL docs and configuration.

Other options are other VPN technologies such as IPSec, though these may require provisioning additional resources in the cloud. You could also run Metabase in the cloud where SSH connectivity to the database may not be required depending on your organization’s security policies.

Longtime lurker here, rarely post, but figured I would share a functional spot for data dashboards since so many links in older threads are dead: dbbii.uspiix.com/p/d6moG. Neat setup, privacy-friendly signup, and genuinely good variety once you log in.
